The Apple company this week published an updated support document and provided the public with a list of its devices that should be kept at a safe distance from medical devices, such as pacemakers, as they may cause magnetic interference.

With this particular update, the company reports that the devices on this specific list should remain more than 6 inches away from medical devices or more than 12 inches away if they support wireless charging functions.

It is certain that several Apple products contain magnets, but their power is not capable of creating interference in medical devices. This month, the American Heart Association conducted research on the interference created by the iPhone 12 Pro Max in medical devices, such as pacemakers, at a distance of approximately 1.5cm. It concluded that even if the device is still in its package, some interference was detected at this short distance. The results were accompanied by the following statement:

“We always knew that magnets could create interference in electronic cardiac implants, but we were impressed by the power of the magnets used in the iPhone 12.”

The company, since the launch of the iPhone 12 series, which is the first to have integrated magsafe technology, has noted that the devices may likely cause such phenomena.
