How to Cool Down an iPhone When It Overheats

When smartphones get too hot, they start to misbehave and can suffer long-term damage. Overheating can affect the performance of the device and decrease the lifespan of the battery. In order to keep your iPhone in pristine condition and prevent frequent overheating, it is important to take measures to cool it down.

Addressing overheating issues will help your iPhone perform smoothly. In this article, we offer some simple tips to cool down an iPhone since new heatwaves are expected in our country this summer too.

Tips to Cool Down Your iPhone

Remove the case

An additional layer of insulation makes it harder for your phone to cool down. Consider a case with heat vents.

Don’t leave your phone in a car in the sun

The temperature can rise quickly in a car that’s parked in the sun. Take your iPhone with you to avoid overheating.

Avoid direct sunlight

If you are on holiday somewhere with intense sunshine, keep your iPhone in a bag or in the shade. Avoid using the phone if possible.

Avoid gaming

Games, especially those with advanced graphics, put a strain on the processor, heating up the device. AR apps can also be demanding and heat up your iPhone.

Stop using Bluetooth

Bluetooth provides an additional source of heat. You can turn it off from the Control Center: swipe down from top right on an iPhone without a Home button and tap the Bluetooth icon. (If your iPhone has a Home button, swipe your finger up from the bottom).

Turn off Location Services

GPS can generate heat. Turn it off using Settings > Privacy > Location Services. Speaking of GPS, avoid using Maps for directions.

Avoid charging the iPhone

Until you get somewhere cooler or until the iPhone has a chance to cool down. Charging heats up the device.

Activate airplane mode

This turns off GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and mobile data. It’s located in the Control Center: tap the airplane icon.

Use the car’s air conditioner

To cool down your iPhone, connect it to a car mount in front of your vehicle’s air vents.

Operating temperature

All current iPhones are designed to operate in ambient temperatures between 0 and 35º C. When the iPhone gets too hot, it will display a warning message that the iPhone “needs to cool down before you can use it”. Normally this will display on a black background, although if you’re using navigation it will appear as an overlay warning.

To continue using your device as soon as possible, turn it off, move it to a cooler environment, and give it a chance to cool down. By following these tips, you can keep your iPhone cool and avoid overheating problems during the hot summer months.
