Users of Samsung’s wireless earbuds facilitate their daily communication, both for voice calls and for video playback. However, an official scientific study proved that the technology behind Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro proves to be much more important than mere communication facilitation. Specifically, a study published in the esteemed scientific journal “Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology” proved that individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss can better perceive the sounds in their environment using these specific earbuds.
The Samsung Medical Center, one of the most significant hospitals in Asia with considerable scientific achievements and high-level medical care, contributed to the research. The company Samsung, has been assisting the hospital for the past decade and focusing on studies concerning the impact of mobile devices on users’ hearing. It explores ways to improve their sound experiences under this domain.
In this particular study, three different products were examined: a hearing aid, a sound enhancement aid, and the Galaxy Buds Pro. It is the first time that wireless earbuds have been used in a similar study. Products from the three categories underwent three tests: electroacoustic evaluation, sound enhancement assessment, and clinical performance evaluation.
Electroacoustic evaluation
In the electroacoustic evaluation, it was examined whether the devices met the basic performance criteria for hearing aids: output sound pressure level, frequency range, equivalent input noise, and total harmonic distortion. The Galaxy Buds Pro successfully passed all the category tests and proved to be equivalent to hearing aids.
Sound enhancement evaluation
During the sound enhancement assessment, each device was examined at seven different frequencies. All devices, including the Galaxy Buds Pro, showed suitability at the sound enhancement level.
Clinical performance evaluation
In the last and perhaps most important test, the devices were examined based on the changes in the participants’ hearing levels. During the research, they were tested both with and without the use of the devices and were asked to recognize words and entire sentences. The average age of the participants was 63 years, and they had mild to moderate hearing loss. 57% of the sample noted that with the help of the Galaxy Buds Pro, they managed to communicate in quiet conditions. It was also proved that Samsung’s wireless earbuds have adequately enhanced sound at three speech frequencies, 1.000Hz, 2.000Hz, and 6.000Hz.
The samples are more than encouraging, as the study proved that people with hearing problems can improve their quality of life. The individuals who face hearing problems to some degree are estimated at 1.5 billion worldwide.
According to the Deputy Professor in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the Samsung Medical Center, Il Joon Moon, “With rapidly aging populations, it is expected that by 2050, one in ten will have hearing loss. However, while hearing aids are useful for managing hearing problems, uptake remains relatively low, primarily due to high price. The preliminary findings from the study are very promising and encourage people to discover alternative devices, such as Galaxy Buds Pro, that can support them in their daily life”.
