All iPhone 15 models will be equipped with a more powerful OLED display driver chip, manufactured based on a 28nm process, compared to 40nm for current models. The main benefit of the 28nm chip will be reduced energy consumption, which could contribute to longer battery life on the iPhone 15.
No ProMotion for basic iPhone 15
Meanwhile, the basic iPhone 15s will not be equipped with an LPTO screen, indicating that the devices will continue not to support ProMotion and Always-on, like the Pro models.
Last year’s iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models used improved low-energy consumption backlight screens that support ProMotion refresh rates ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz.
The screen refresh rate adapts to whatever is displayed, with lower rates used for static content and the higher rates intended for moving data, such as games and videos, for a smoother and more flexible experience.
According to an industry source, only the Pro models of the iPhone 15 series will be equipped with the LPTO panels required for ProMotion, suggesting that the feature will remain exclusive to Apple’s more expensive models.
Only on the Pro models and the Always–on
If the source is correct, the option of the Always-on screen will also remain an exclusive feature of the Pro, as the 1Hz refresh rate capability of the LPTO panels is the one that allows a dormant lock screen to remain visible without significantly affecting the battery.
The source confirms the thought of screen analyst Ross Young, who in September 2022 stated that while he expects the Dynamic Island will be available on all iPhone 15 models, production scale restrictions will likely prevent Apple from bringing LPTO panels to the entire series.
