The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max make their appearance from Apple as the most powerful and durable models in iPhone history. Rumors about the use of titanium in construction, the incorporation of a new powerful telescope in the camera system, as well as the addition of the port and USB-C cable, are confirmed. The only element that did not follow the rumors was the price increase.
The new Pro models stand out for how lightweight they are and for their durability, thanks to the use of Grade 5 titanium, which is the same material used in NASA’s Mars Rover. They also offer the thinnest screen frames ever seen on an iPhone.
The addition of a customizable Action button is confirmed instead of the classic mute switch that characterizes iPhones for many decades. Now, the button will have multiple functions, can be pressed in various ways, and will offer different vibration options (haptic feedback), depending on the settings you have selected.
Moving forward, the new A17 Pro chip opens a new chapter in the processor power of the iPhone. Incorporating 3nm technology, the chip hosts 19 billion transistors, the most powerful ever manufactured by Apple. The company showcased specific demos which showed that the new models can support even titles such as Resident Evil 4 Remake, Resident Evil Village, and the upcoming The Division: Resurgence. The Assassin’s Creed Mirage is also expected to run smoothly on the iPhone 15 Pro with a version that will be released in 2024.
In detail, the updated GPU of the iPhone 15 Pro brings a new shader architecture, designed by Apple’s engineers. According to the company, it is the most significant redesign in the history of Apple’s GPUs. The GPU has six cores and offers performance that is up to 20% higher than the previous generation. Additionally, new rendering technologies are supported for even better performance, such as mesh shading, and for more realistic graphics, such as ray tracing. Apple has even developed its upscaling algorithm called MetalFX.
The improved camera in the Pro models will offer the feeling of seven different lenses.
The truly impressive feature in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max is the variety of focal lengths and lenses included. These models support photography and video in focal lengths of 13mm, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 48mm, and 120mm, making them ideal for professional use. The most powerful lens is the 120mm, which offers x5 optical zoom, as opposed to the x3 zoom of older models. This lens is only available on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, due to its larger space. In addition, the camera system includes improved features for portrait photos and Night mode, thanks to the upgraded Photonic Engine and the ultra-wide camera.
The USB 3.0 Type-C port allows faster data transfer than ever, and the new models will be able to record video directly to an external disk, with the support of ProRes video at 4K 60fps.
In addition, the iPhone 15 Pro is the first smartphone that supports the ACES grading standard of the Academy of Motion Pictures, used in Oscar-winning films. The model also supports Spatial video recording for Apple Vision Pro. It comes with a battery that lasts all day and comes pre-installed with iOS 17.
All new iPhones are available for preorder from today and will be available in stores from September 22 with prices that remain the same as last year. So, contrary to rumors of a price increase, the iPhone 15 Pro will start at $999 and the iPhone 15 Pro Max at $1199. Now, the cheapest Pro Max model will be the 256GB one, hence the difference compared to the more affordable 14 Pro Max, which came with 128GB. Of course, we are looking forward to learning at what prices the new iPhone 15 Pro will arrive in the Greek market.
