Vivo’s new foldable phones, the X Fold2 and X Flip, were announced on Thursday, April 20th. The second-generation horizontal foldable phone from vivo brings enhancements at all levels with a redesigned hinge mechanism, the latest generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, new cameras, and 120W wired charging.
The X Flip is vivo’s first attempt at a foldable clamshell and features a large 3-inch external display, Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, and a 50MP main camera. Unfortunately, vivo has not shared details about a global launch.
Vivo X Fold2
The X Fold2 comes with an 8.03-inch E6 AMOLED display with a resolution of 2160 × 1916 px and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The panel has an aspect ratio of 4:3.55 and a new droplet type hinge system which is lighter and more durable compared to the one used in last year’s X Fold and X Fold+.
It also features a 6.53-inch external AMOLED display with a resolution of 2520 × 1080 px and a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a more traditional aspect ratio of 21:9. Both panels feature ultrasonic fingerprint scanners and 16MP front cameras housed in a hole. As for the dimensions, the X Fold2 is 1.5 millimeters thinner than its predecessor when folded and over 30 grams lighter.
The X Fold2 integrates a triple camera on the back with a main 50MP IMX866V unit with OIS coating and Zeiss T* lens, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 12MP 2x portrait lens that also offers up to 20x digital zoom.
The camera system is backed by vivo’s self-developed V2 image chip, which renders enhanced HDR in photos and videos and better noise reduction. The X Fold2 can record videos up to 8K at 30 fps and features the Zeiss Cinematic mode.
The phone is running on Android 13 with OriginOS 3, which offers several enhancements for the larger screen. These include a taskbar for easy multitasking, a remote PC control function, and a user-specific environment in certain applications when you prop up the hinge at an angle. The device is powered by a 4,800 mAh battery with 120 W wired charging and 50 W wireless charging.
The vivo X Fold2 is available in two versions – one with 12/256 GB priced at 8,999 CNY (1,308 $) and a 12/512 GB version for 9,999 CNY (1,453 $).
Vivo X Flip
The X Flip is vivo’s first foldable clamshell phone and features a spacious 3-inch external AMOLED screen that you can use for virtually everything- from sending messages to navigating maps and using social media apps.
vivo is actively collaborating with app developers on optimizing their apps for the cover display so users can complete most tasks without having to open the internal screen.
The main screen is a 6.74-inch LTPO AMOLED with FHD+ resolution and a 120 Hz refresh rate. It also features a water-droplet type hinge mechanism that should handle the infamous crease that appears on most foldable screens.
The X Flip features a 32 MP front camera and a side-mounted fingerprint reader. It is powered by a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset internally, coupled with 12 GB RAM and up to 512 GB storage. The camera department features the same 50MP Sony IMX866V sensor with OIS as in the X Fold2, along with a 12MP ultrawide unit.
The phone can be propped flat on a table and you can adjust the hinge to the desired position for hands-free selfies. You can also use the 50MP main camera for even better details. It comes with a 4,400 mAh battery with 44 W quick charging and Origin OS3 based on Android 13.
The vivo X Flip starts at 5,999 CNY (872 $) for the 12/256 GB variant and goes up to 6,699 CNY (973 $) for the 12/512 GB model.
