Millions of European citizens use more than one electronic devices daily, which are manufactured in Asia and America. Their repair is often a complex and costly process, which led the European Parliament to approve proposals to manufacturers for easier repair and for establishing a special rating similar to the iFixit rating.
Among the approved proposals are the automatic extension of warranty if the repair takes more than a month, the reduction in prices of critical spare parts as well as the ability to choose an independent repairman by the users. Special mention is made on the subject of batteries and specifically on the existence of removable and not permanently installed batteries in mobile phones so that their replacement can extend the lifespan of smartphones.
In addition, the European Parliament asked manufacturers for a certification for each product in the “repairability score” standards of iFixit, which will indicate the lifespan, their environmental characteristics and the ability to upgrade them. This effort is of an ecological nature, since making the repair of devices easier, incentives are given to users not to throw away products that can be easily fixed and, on the other hand, to boost the European market so as not to be so dependent on Asian and American technological giants.
