Viber asks for “Divorce” from Facebook

Viber, the popular instant messaging platform, halts any business collaboration with Facebook due to the latter’s inability to tackle the violent rhetoric of its users, which has now taken on large dimensions.

Specifically, Rakuten Viber actively supports the #StopHateForProfit movement that stands against Facebook. Thus, it announced the complete removal of Facebook Connect, Facebook SDK and GIPHY from its platform. At the same time, it has stopped advertising through Facebook.

Rakuten Viber is not the only company boycotting the veteran of Social Media. A host of organizations, including the Anti-Defamation League and the NAACP, following recent protests for human rights in the United States, called on companies to stop spending advertising budget on Facebook for the entire month of July. With this specific movement, they react to the platform’s unwillingness to prevent violent rhetoric.

Of course, it is not the first time that Facebook is facing a massive wave of dissatisfaction. It is reminded that in the past it was accused of misuse and leakage of personal data, with the famous Cambridge Analytica scandal being the peak. Then, the political consultancy had maliciously exploited the personal data of 87 million users.

“Facebook continues to show that it does not understand its role in today’s world. From the company’s poor data management and lack of privacy protection in its applications, to its outrageous stance to avoid taking measures that are necessary to protect the public from violent and dangerous rhetoric, Facebook has gone too far,” Djamel Agaoua, CEO of Viber, said characteristically.
