The new trend in smartphones is large screens that cover the front surface of the device. With screens “spreading”, there is no longer room for home buttons or pop-up selfie cameras, and Xiaomi knows it well. Thus, it revealed that its new models will feature third-generation cameras under the screen!
But what are the disadvantages of these hidden cameras? On the one hand, they create a dark hole in the screen, while selfies come out blurry. The company found a solution to these problems, representatives of which stated that thanks to the new generation technology they have developed, they can perfectly hide the front camera under the phone’s screen without affecting the edge-to-edge screen effect and without affecting the quality of the photos. Additionally, they optimized the camera’s algorithm to perform the same as conventional front cameras.
Xiaomi’s technology is based on a pixel grid arrangement that allows light to pass through the empty area of the sub-pixels. At the same time, individual pixels have a full RGB subpixel arrangement without lacking in pixel density. In this way, brightness, color gamut, and color accuracy remain unchanged. This new feature is expected to be incorporated into Xiaomi’s new smartphones that will be released in 2021. As at present, attempts at prototype selfie cameras under the screen have proved fruitless, we’ll see in a few months whether Xiaomi can bring the revolution!
