Apple seems to be investing in a new technology related to the internal cleaning of smartphones. Until now, the emphasis was on the external cleaning of iPhones, which is easily achieved with a cotton cloth and water or a special microfiber cloth. However, the cleanliness inside the device is currently impossible for the average user, as it requires disassembly.
The dust that accumulates inside can affect the performance of the iPhone. So the American tech giant is proposed to solve self-cleaning, researching a system that can self-clean the phone’s interior. According to the website AppleInsider, it’s about a patent from Apple, a system of cleaning sensors using ultraviolet light.
The patent is described as follows:
“UV rays can start a photo-oxidation process, which leads to the decomposition of squalene. In the reaction with ultraviolet light, squalene, represented by its chemical formula, decomposes into three by-products… that may not be dangerous to environmental sensors.” As can be inferred from the above, it’s a complicated process that must be thoroughly tested before implementation. However, with the recent spread of the covid-19 pandemic, hygiene and general disinfection are becoming a continually growing need. Whether Apple will apply this specific technology is still under review.
