What would the iPhone look like without the notch?

The notch on the iPhone is a feature that divides many users. Many of them consider it unnecessary and not so elegant, while others argue that it is one of the distinctive features in the design of these specific smartphones. Lately, rumors circulate more and more often that Apple plans to remove the notch in order to enlarge the screens.

It has not yet been decided by the authorities whether the notch will shrink or be completely removed. For this to happen, a technological trick must be found to replace it. The most reliable assumption so far comes from popular Apple leaker Jon Prosser, who claims that the next iPhone to be released in 2021, whether it’s the iPhone 13 or named differently, will have a smaller notch.

According to other bloggers, Apple is designing a new model which will be released in 2022 and will not feature the characteristic notch on its front face. Specifically, Ming-Chi Kuo reports that the iPhone 14 Pro which will be released in 2022 will have a “punch-hole” screen design.

But what would an iPhone we’re used to with a notch-less design look like?

The first reasonable question is what will happen to the Face ID feature. If Apple removes the notch from the front portion of the screen, an alternative to Face ID will have to be found. The competition has already introduced new technologies, and it is very likely that Apple will adopt the corresponding technology that it used on the iPad Air in iPhones, that is, the integrated Touch ID in the power button.

It is rather unlikely that Apple will replace Face ID with a less reliable and contemporary technology. Therefore, it will have to think of an efficient alternative way to unlock the device safely. A programmer posted three different versions on his personal twitter account of what the iPhone could look like without the notch.

Essentially, he supports, like Kuo, that the technology Apple could launch is the “punch-hole design”. According to this combination, both the front camera and the Face ID sensors no longer appear in the notch but as three small dots on the screen. The dots could be placed horizontally or forming a triangle. Finally, there is a less likely version that wants Face ID to be placed under the screen. The only sure thing is that despite the various speculation, Apple keeps the design of its next models as a top-secret. Consequently, whether you like the notch on the iPhone or you are among the advocates of its abolition, the only sure thing is that you will have to wait until official announcements.
