Google is preparing to launch an iOS application for copying data to Android

A new application seems to be ready to be published by Google under the name “Switch to Android” with which users can create backups from the most important data of their iPhone, as well as transfer their apps to Android.

Until now, the safest way to transfer data from iPhone to Android was to create backup copies of all elements on Google Drive and then download them again on the new device. With this method, users are able to create backups of their most important data and photos, but not their apps.

The official Data Restore Tool from Android has recently been updated to version 1.0.382048734, and there are references to an “Switch to Android” app that Google has developed for iOS, similar to the “Move to iOS” app from Apple for Android. Below, we guide you through the process of data transfer via these apps.

Step 1:

Download from the App Store the “Switch to Android” app. Your data will not need to be copied via a USB-C cable, but the app will create a local Wi-Fi network on your Android – like hotspots – which you will connect to from your iPhone. Afterward, the apps will take care of the rest of the process.

Step 2:

From the Wi-Fi settings, connect to the network and enter the password. With “Switch to Android”, a large extent of the Data Restore Tool text is modified, stating that now your apps can be copied from your iPhone. To be able to transfer apps, iCloud contacts, device contacts, and iMessage messages, you must have disabled device management on iPhone.

It is still unclear how this will be feasible, other than having a table where the correspondence of iOS apps with Android will appear and will be installed from the Play Store. Of course, it is most likely that paid apps will not be transferable.

For now, the “Switch to Android” app is not yet available in the App Store, but it is expected soon, given that Apple has had the “Move to iOS” app for five years now. This is surprising, as Google has let such a long period pass before creating something equivalent.
