The new free computer emulator, UTM SE, is now available in the App Store for Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro. This emulator offers support for various versions of Windows, as well as systems based on PowerPC and RISC-V. If you are looking for alternative ways to use your devices, the Turing Software team has created this emulator, which will soon be available in the Alt Store too.
The UTM SE app, with a size of 1.7 GB, is based on the QEMU platform, which allows running multiple operating systems as virtual machines. Turing Software provides various configuration files, such as Ubuntu 22.04, the ARM version of ArchLinux, Windows XP and Windows 11, which you can download for free from the developers’ website. System images can be loaded directly through Apple’s Files app, although sometimes you will need to download the ISO file separately and select it manually in UTM.
Turing Software advises not to exceed 20% of your device’s available RAM for the virtual machine, as this can cause the emulator to be terminated by iOS. Although this restrictive setting may affect the operation of modern operating systems, Windows XP, which requires only 20 GB of flash memory and 512 MB RAM, should run smoothly on an Apple iPhone 15. With UTM, you can run older software without problems, including classic games like Doom and text-based games. Also, users can store and switch between multiple operating systems effortlessly.
