Apple is reportedly planning to introduce cameras to AirPods, aiming to mass-produce updated earbuds with built-in infrared cameras by 2026.
The information comes from a new report by trusted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The cameras could enhance Apple's current and future augmented reality headsets with improved spatial audio capabilities. According to the analyst, using these upgraded AirPods alongside Vision Pro could significantly improve Apple's spatial computing experience. For example, “if users turn their heads in a particular direction, the sound source in that direction can be emphasised,” Kuo explained.
The infrared cameras could also offer in-air gesture controls, similar to Apple's FaceID facial recognition feature. This could allow users to control AirPods with gestures, adding a new dimension to how they interact with the device.
There is also talk of AirPods with health-tracking capabilities, although Apple has not yet introduced such functionality.
