Apple has announced the new updated iMac, which is expected to launch in 2020. Fans of the iMac will not have to wait long to see the computers' new and improved features, most of which concern the 27-inch iMac, but also the 21,5-inch iMac and iMac Pro.
Among the improvements is the upgrade to 10th-generation Intel processors. There are also four CPU SKUs available. The entry-level 27-inch iMac features a three-core Core i5 with a clock speed of 3,1GHz. Thanks to the Turbo function, it can reach up to 4,5GHz. The mid-range variant has a Core i5 (three cores) at 3,3GHz, which can boost its Turbo speed to 4,8GHz. The high-end model features a Core i7 (cores) at 3,8GHz, which can reach up to 5,0GHz. Both the mid-range and high-end models can also be configured with a 3,6GHz Core i9 (10 cores). With the Turbo function, it reaches a speed of 5,0GHz!
The entry-level and mid-range iMac variants also feature AMD Radeon Pro 5300 with 4 GB GDDR6 VRAM, while the high-end model features the Radeon Pro 5500 XT with 8 GB GDDR6. However, it can be configured with Radeon Pro 5700 with 8 GB GDDR6 or Radeon Pro 5700 XT with 16 GB GDDR6.
The upgraded iMac models would not be complete without more memory and storage options. All three new models come with 8 GB (2x4GB) 2666MHz DDR4 memory, configurable up to a total of 128 GB across the four SO-DIMM slots, which are now user-accessible. What about storage? It is entirely flash-based, with 256 GB in the entry-level model, 512 GB in the mid-range model with 1TB or 2TB options, and 512GB with 1TB, 2TB, 4TB or 8TB options in the premium version.
Meanwhile, to enhance the new flash-based storage, Apple has included the T2 Security Chip in the 27-inch iMac, which includes a storage controller for encrypting storage drives and enabling secure boot. Want even more? Apple has equipped the new 27-inch iMac with a 1080p camera for perfect picture quality on FaceTime calls, as well as an improved microphone array. In addition, the ISP in the T2 chip enables tone mapping, exposure control and face detection on the new camera, while also working with the speakers to deliver variable EQ, higher fidelity and deeper bass.
