The latest trend in smartphones is large screens that cover the front of the device. With screens ‘expanding’, there is no longer room for home buttons or pop-up selfie cameras, and Xiaomi knows this well. The company has therefore revealed that its new models will feature third-generation under-display cameras!
But what are the drawbacks of these hidden cameras? For one thing, they create a dark spot on the screen, while selfies come out blurry. The company has found a solution to these problems, with its representatives stating that, thanks to the next-generation technology they have developed, they can perfectly conceal the front camera beneath the phone's display without affecting the edge-to-edge screen effect or compromising the quality of the photos. They have also optimised the camera algorithm so that it performs just as well as conventional front cameras.
The technology developed by Xiaomi relies on a pixel grid arrangement that allows light to pass through the gaps between sub-pixels. At the same time, individual pixels have a full RGB subpixel layout without compromising pixel density. This means that brightness, colour gamut and colour accuracy remain unchanged. The new feature is expected to be incorporated into Xiaomi's new smartphones, which will be released in 2021. As attempts to develop prototype under-display selfie cameras have so far proved unsuccessful, it remains to be seen in a few months whether Xiaomi will manage to bring about a revolution!
