Apple has announced that it will add support for Qi2 wireless charging to all iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models with the iOS 17.2 update. This means that users of these devices will be able to charge their phones at up to 15W using wireless chargers that support Qi2.
Until now, 15W wireless charging has only been available on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 through MagSafe chargers. These chargers are more expensive than conventional wireless chargers, as Apple charges extra for MagSafe certification.
MagSafe chargers use a magnetic ring to align the phone precisely with the charger. This helps improve charging efficiency and reduces the risk of overheating.
The iOS 17.2 update will add support for the Qi2 standard to all iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models. Qi2 is a new wireless charging standard developed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC).
Qi2 is based on Apple's MagSafe magnetic charging technology, so Qi2 chargers will be compatible with the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14.
Adding Qi2 support to older iPhone models will bring several benefits.
- It will allow users of these devices to benefit from faster wireless charging speeds without having to buy a new charger.
- It will make 15W wireless charging more accessible, as Qi2 chargers are likely to be cheaper than MagSafe chargers.
- It will help create a more open and competitive wireless charging ecosystem.
When will the update be released?
Apple has not announced a release date for the iOS 17.2 update. However, it is expected to be released within the next few weeks.
