First, WhatsApp introduced conversations that… disappear. Recently, Messenger and Instagram adopted the same disappearing messages feature, giving users the option not to keep selected conversations in their chat history. The latest messages are automatically deleted after the chat window is closed.
To enable this feature, users simply need to swipe up at the bottom of the conversation where the relevant prompt appears. Messages remain on screen until the app is closed. This feature is available in both individual and group conversations. However, in group conversations, although messages disappear immediately, they remain in the system for 14 days. This is because Facebook allows conversations to be reported.
Instagram will soon adopt this disappearing messages feature too. For now, it allows photos sent via direct message to disappear.
Even with disappearing conversations, users should be particularly careful and not too trusting. Even if someone tells you that the messages you send will be deleted automatically, do not forget that screenshots are always an option!
