Apple is making a significant transition in its accessories, moving away from the Lightning cable era that lasted for more than a decade. By replacing it with the USB-C port, the company is complying with European legislation while aiming to make things more convenient for users.
During the "Wonderlust" event, it was announced that the AirPods Pro 2 (also known as the 2nd generation) will feature a new MagSafe Charging case with a USB-C port. In addition to USB-C charging, this version offers improved dust resistance for both the earbuds and their case. They also have an IP54 rating for water resistance, compared with the previous IPX4 rating. These earbuds will also offer Lossless audio quality (20bit, 48kHz) with low latency on Apple Vision Pro. With iOS 17, all versions of the 2nd-generation AirPods Pro will gain new features such as Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness. In addition, AirPods owners will be able to charge their earbuds directly from their iPhone for the first time, provided they have an iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max.
However, it is not just AirPods that are changing. Apple's classic, straightforward wired earphones, also known as EarPods, will now come in a USB-C version, as Apple announced during the "Wonderlust" event. Prices will start at $19 in the United States.
Of course, Apple also announced a new Lightning to USB-C adapter for those who are not yet ready to make the transition to the iPhone 15.
The 2nd-generation AirPods Pro with a USB-C case will be available from 22 September, the same date as the iPhone 15 launch, priced at $249.
