Apple takes the issue of battery swelling seriously in some of its older models. In its efforts to address this issue, it has already filed two patent applications describing a system for detecting battery swelling at an early stage.
A related report by AppleInsider states that the manufacturer intends to address the problem at the very first signs. The patent applications describe reducing the size of the device while also adding a system that will detect battery swelling. The new technology from Apple prioritises user safety, while also exploring changes to device dimensions to make them smaller and easier to use.
Battery swelling can occur in devices that use lithium batteries. This does not mean that all batteries that have “swollen” can explode while the device is in use, but they can still be quite dangerous. With the new technology, Apple detects these kinds of problems early by incorporating special components into the battery casing, such as a protective metal shell. Earthing will allow other components to be placed near the battery without being affected if swelling occurs.
The additional system Apple is considering for detecting and mitigating battery swelling could even use a processor to slow down or prevent the problem. Now that the patent applications have been filed, the company will soon be able to incorporate these innovations into its upcoming models, allowing us to learn more about exactly how they will work.
