Most foldable smartphones on the market today fold inwards, protecting their main screen with the outer casing. For users' convenience, they usually feature a smaller external screen for viewing notifications and performing basic tasks.
However, some companies, such as Huawei, have introduced devices that fold outwards, allowing the screen to cover both the front and back of the device. Although these devices are sleeker, they have drawbacks in terms of durability, as part of the screen remains constantly exposed to knocks and wear.
Now, a new design from Samsung is coming to light, combining both technologies. According to a patent secured by the company, it is a foldable smartphone that can fold both inwards and outwards, as reported by @xleaks7.

The device features hinges that allow the screen to fold through 360 degrees, eliminating the need for a separate external screen. In addition, even when folded, a section of the screen remains visible below the camera module, providing functionality for the user.
According to the patent description, Samsung has developed special support layers beneath the flexible ultra-thin glass (UTG) screen. These include flexible polymer substrates and a customised adhesive layer, providing enhanced durability and flexibility. The device also uses separate folding mechanisms and customised support plates, which allow the screen to bend smoothly in either direction, thanks to a specially designed grid and strip pattern.
It is worth noting that Samsung unveiled a similar prototype device called "Flex In & Out" in 2023, although there have been no further updates so far on whether or when this technology will reach the market.
