Samsung has now officially announced the end of the iconic Galaxy Note brand name. In an announcement at Mobile World Congress 2022, the company’s head of mobile, Roh Tae-moon, stated that Galaxy Note features would now live on in the Galaxy S Ultra series, also referring to the recent launch of the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
Rumours had been circulating for some time, as Samsung has not released a Galaxy Note device since 2020.
The first Galaxy Note was released around a decade ago, in October 2011. Its 5.3-inch screen, enormous for the time, caused a stir and outshone rival manufacturers’ offerings. Over time, however, smartphones with large screens became increasingly common, causing the series to lose the innovative edge it had at launch. As new models continued to arrive in the Galaxy S series, which shares many of the Note’s features, the S-Pen stylus was essentially the main distinguishing factor between them.

The launch of the Galaxy Note 7 also damaged the series’ reputation, as Samsung had to suspend production due to defects in the device’s batteries.
What we are seeing now is essentially the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series coming together under a new brand name, Galaxy S Ultra. After all, the Note’s heritage is easy to spot in the Galaxy S22 Ultra simply by looking at its angular design. By combining these two brand names, Samsung looks set to remain a leader in large-screen smartphones for a long time to come.
