The sensors in the latest smartphones have advanced significantly recently, with resolutions reaching 108MP. According to reports, Samsung is leading the way in development, having designed a new 600MP sensor! The news was leaked by a tipster with access to the company's inner workings, who backs up the claim with a slide from a presentation Samsung gave to its partners.
Although we remain very cautious, the leaked slide suggests that Samsung is looking for a solution for 4K and 8K video, which may well come from a sensor of this size with a high resolution that would allow zooming without compromising image quality.
Even if the rumours are true, we are unlikely to see this kind of sensor any time soon, as, based on current technology, 600MP at a size of 1/0.57’’ and a pixel size of 0.8μm would take up around 12% of the back of the smartphone, with the sensor protruding by 22mm. So before launch, the size will clearly need to be adjusted!
