Early analyses of the new iPhone 14 models showed that die-hard Apple fans “loved” the Pro models more, turning their backs on the company’s two standard models.
More specifically, Erik Woodring, a Morgan Stanley analyst specialising in Apple, analysed delivery times for initial orders of the new models and issued a report for the investment bank’s clients. Delivery time is the period between placing an order and getting the product in your hands. In this case, Woodring is looking at delivery times for all the new iPhone 14 models – Pro and non-Pro.
What the delivery time analysis revealed
According to his report, the delivery time for the iPhone 14 Pro Max in the United States was the longest for any Apple product in the past six years. More specifically, the average delivery time for the iPhone Pro Max was 36,5 days. This is a week longer than the 29,5-day delivery time for the iPhone 14 Pro, the third-longest delivery time in the past six years and equal to the delivery times for last year’s iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Alongside strong demand for the new iPhone 14 Pro range in the world’s third-largest smartphone market, Apple also performed exceptionally well in the world’s leading smartphone market, China. There, more than 2 million orders were placed for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max in the first 24 hours after pre-orders opened.
Meanwhile, with a delivery time of six days, the iPhone 14 lagged far behind in demand, suggesting that Apple customers want more changes to the non-Pro models. Woodring had no delivery time for the iPhone 14 Plus, as the 6,7-inch non-Pro model will not ship until 7 October.
However, delivery times are not based solely on demand for the models. The supply chain plays an important role, as does the ability to ship products quickly to consumers.
Still, it should come as no surprise that the Pro models are in greater demand. That is because they alone feature the better chip, the A16 bionic, upgraded 48 MP cameras and Dynamic Island. So it makes sense that if someone has decided to buy an iPhone, they will choose a Pro, regardless of the price difference. Perhaps that was Apple’s original goal all along!
