The iPhone 12 has only been on the market for a few months, but speculation about its successor is already growing. Rumours suggest that the company will return to its previous model naming convention, meaning the next iPhone will be the iPhone 12S rather than the iPhone 13.
Reports suggest that Apple's new smartphone will launch in September 2021 without significant differences from the iPhone 12. It will therefore be an upgraded version, which also explains the return of the distinctive «S» in its name.
As for superstitions surrounding the number 13, which many consider unlucky, Apple has shown no sign of sharing them, unlike Microsoft, which skipped the number and went from version 12 of Office straight to version 14.
According to sources, the new iPhone model is at the proofing stage in the laboratories of the Foxconn Shenzhen factory. There, it will have to pass «tests» for both design and functionality, followed by the necessary improvements before mass production begins. This process takes around 9 months. It is therefore highly unlikely that we will see the unveiling before autumn.
Other sources, specifically the Japanese website Mac Otakara, which cites information from a supply chain company, suggest that Apple will release four new iPhone models in 2021, with very minor differences between the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 13. Finally, regarding the rumour that all 2021 iPhone models, not just the Pro ranges, will come with LiDAR, all that is known is that Apple has signed an agreement with Sony to ensure that it will not be used in the iPhone until at least 2023.
