Smartphone manufacturers compete to create the best camera to give their products a significant edge. In recent years, there have been major improvements to both iOS, through software optimisation, and Android, which has brought us high-resolution cameras. This means a 12MP sensor in an iPhone can outperform a 40MP sensor in an Android phone.
Following the recent release of the iPhone 12, its camera has come under scrutiny from analysts. According to DxOMark, Apple's new smartphone scores 128 points, placing it fifth, some way behind the Huawei Mate 40 Pro and Huawei P40 Pro, as well as the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra.
However, the new iPhone 12 scores higher than its predecessor, the iPhone 11 Pro Max, and is Apple's best smartphone to date in terms of its camera, with improved zoom and video. Nevertheless, its zoom still falls short of the leader in this category because it has a telephoto lens with only 2x optical zoom.
Among its strengths is the autofocus system, which can focus quickly and very accurately, as well as the image preview, which earned very high scores. In terms of image quality, colour reproduction is very good under indoor lighting, though there are visible issues in outdoor images.
The video mode offers dynamic range when HDR is enabled and creates a cinematic effect in scenes with high contrast. Here too, the dynamic range of photos remains better than that of video.
