A new 6th-generation iPad Pro with an M2 chipset is expected in autumn 2022, according to Mark Gurman, a Bloomberg analyst. Although the company unveiled the new iPad Air among other products at this year's Peek Performance Event, there was no mention of the iPad Pro range, despite the widespread rumours surrounding it.
As Gurman reported in his Power On newsletter, Apple is set to offer support for MagSafe wireless charging, also found on the iPhone 12 and 13, and Apple Silicon in the new generation of iPads.
Unlike the new iPad Air and iPad Pro 2021, which feature an M1 processor, this model is expected to have an M2 chipset. Although Apple has yet to confirm this, Gurman claims that the CPU will be slightly faster than the M1 and will be built on the same eight-core architecture. It is also expected to be more efficient, with improved energy efficiency thanks to TSMC's 4-nanometre process. It is also said to feature more GPU cores. As for memory and storage, based on previous iPad Pro models, we are certain to see similar figures, ranging from 128GB to 1TB.
In terms of design, the new iPad generation is rumoured to look very similar to its predecessor. Although initial reports suggested it would feature a glass back, it is more likely to be made from a titanium alloy and have slimmer screen bezels. Otherwise, we certainly expect to see flat edges and the classic Notch at the top of the screen. There is also talk of an additional camera lens, perhaps even a triple rear camera with a LiDAR sensor, a clear upgrade over the existing models.
So far, there have been many conflicting reports about the screen size. Some rumours claim that both versions, one at 12.9 inches and the other at 11 inches, will feature an OLED LTPO display with ProMotion technology.
Apple usually holds product launch events between September and November, so we expect the official announcement of the new iPad Pro generation during that period in 2022.
