Apple made a move with the iPhone 16 range that surprised many. It gave the base model more upgrades than ever, leaving fewer reasons to upgrade to the iPhone 16 Pro. However, recent rumours about the upcoming iPhone SE may reveal the reason behind this decision.
In recent years, the launches of new base iPhone models, such as the iPhone 15 and 14, have failed to capture much consumer attention, as they usually resembled the previous year's Pro models. Upgrades were limited, with the new base model mainly adopting the chip and a few other features from the previous year's Pro.
This year, however, the base iPhone 16 comes with:
- A new A18 chip, almost on a par with the A18 Pro
- Camera Control, a feature that would previously have been exclusive to Pro models
- Visual intelligence, exclusive to the iPhone 16 range
- Second-generation Photographic Styles
- The Action Button, Apple Intelligence support and a USB-C port, as on the iPhone 15 Pro
These upgrades make the base iPhone 16 incredibly appealing, attracting more buyers than ever, including those who would usually choose a Pro model. And this may be where the iPhone SE 4 comes into play.
Reports suggest that the iPhone SE 4, expected in spring, will bring major changes to budget iPhones, offering features such as:
- A design with a notch and no Home button
- An OLED display, replacing the existing LCD
- An A18 chip with 8 GB RAM and Apple Intelligence support
- A 48MP main camera
- A new Apple-designed 5G modem
With these features, the iPhone SE 4 is expected to offer great value. If the price stays at $429 or rises to $499, the SE 4 will be a strong rival to the iPhone 16.
If Apple had not significantly upgraded the iPhone 16, leaving out features such as Camera Control, the A18 chip or visual intelligence, the iPhone SE 4 might have been a more appealing choice. With the upgrades to the iPhone 16, however, the differences between the two models are clear.
Overall, with the iPhone 16 and SE 4, Apple offers strong models at every price point:
- Looking for something affordable? The iPhone SE 4 will offer excellent value.
- Want more advanced features? The iPhone 16 is the answer.
- Want the best iPhone? That's the iPhone 16 Pro.
